South Africa

I have been for 5 days to South Africa with the company – and what a beautiful country this is. We flew in Tuesday night to Johannesburg and from there directly to Durban. Here we went to the beach for some lunch and a walk in the sand.

After that and a beer in the sun, we drove to Tala, one of the many privately owned game parks in SA. After a fantastic dinner with traditional African singing, we had to get up early the next day for a ‘Pirsch’. I saw Zebras, Impalas, Warthogs, Giraffes, Hypos and Rhinoceros.
After a breakfast with a further view on the animals, I went to visit a traditional Zulu school, where we watched the buildings, planted trees and offered gifts to the mayor (a cow) and the children (pencils and sweets). After that we visited a fortune teller and a woman who had cooked some traditional Zulu dishes with traditional Zulu beer. Although they will never be my favourites, I still finished the plate. Overlooking what these people in the back lands of South Africa have to live with and from, makes you realise very directly how privileged the life is we are allowed to live in Europe. Being able to help, even though little, made the trip even more worthwhile.

After the Zulu village, we drove to a huge tent site at the foot of the Drakensberge, a big national park at the border to Lesotho, where we joined the other groups to be a total of 160 people. After a great dinner in the open air with fires all around to warm us, a drum session in which I bruised my hand so badly it is still half blue and a cold night in the tent, at 7 o clock in the morning, we went for a 6-hour hike in the mountains. The views were fantastic and memorable.

In the afternoon, with tired legs, there was a soccer match against the local team. We had brought footballs, T-shirts etc as a gift and even lost the match as a final giveaway…….

At night a final dinner under the stars, a warmer night and finally a 6 hour drive back to Johannesburg, from which we took the plane back to Frankfurt.

The total trip was incredible, enjoying great wildlife, fantastic landscape views, super food & wine and a unique group of colleagues.
